Week 9 Part A: Blogs, Vlogs, Podcasts & Webinars
Human relations are crucial to create connections with people around us. Individuals are always looking where do they fit and in which "groups" they belong. For example, in high school it is common to see teenagers building their personality, discovering what they like/dislike and where they are inserted. We usually see the group of people who likes music, the group of athletes, the group of arts etc. People have different interests and they want to connect with people who share the same beliefs. In the digital world is the same way, but since it's online and we don't have the human contact, it's important to be wise on how you want to communicate your message and to be too extreme creating segregation as well.
Blogging is a good way to get this closer and personal connection with your audience, once you can write more your personal ideals and beliefs, sharing also your values. But it is something that has to be done with a lot of cautious once it can have misinterpretation.
When you are trying to build this connection over blogging you want to be yourself and show a little of your personality with your writing style and the content you share. Even though the focus is who relates with you and wants to connect with you, you also need to think that some people might disagree with you as well, so you always have to be respectful. Toning is a relevant thing to be considered, some words that you choose may give an interpretation where you sound rude, when you are not. You can use humor as well, if what you share has an opening for humor.
Personally, I engage with my friends and people on social media using a lot of humor. I share stories telling about my life always trying to get people's attention by laughing at something that happened to me, because that is my personality. But in a business, you need to find a balance as well.
For my business, the jiu jitsu gym, I think blogging can be very relevant. We can share a lot of interesting information such as facts on why to train jiu jitsu, the history of jiu jistu, the importance of training, healthy tips, how to keep motivated, what our coaches do in order to become high performance athletes, how some techniques work... there are so many things that we can write about, and like said previously, using our tone and personal writing would probably bring our target audience closer to us, having the feeling that they know who we are.
I think we would have the freedom of style to post using different techniques to bring different emotions from our audience. But some businesses are not able to have this freedom. For example, a medical company can't use so much humor to talk to its audience once dealing with health problems is something that cause a lot of worries to people and it needs a serious tone to have a trustworthy reputation.
I personally met a blogger, who started writing about trips that she did around the world and some advices on hotels, touristic places, food to eat in different places she traveled to. The blog is called "Must Share Brazil". She was so focused on the content she shared that she started to gain a lot of popularity, then she decided to start a Youtube channel and share more about it. She was so good with her communication, style and stories that she started making money with Youtube views and she quit her 9-5 job to focus on this. Now she is a full time blogger and youtuber and the content she shares is so helpful and interesting. It is a full time job and she always tell me how hard it is sometimes to find a clear communication to people sharing her ideals without creating conflict, once there are all types of opinions out there.
Blogging can be a way to become successful, either if you have a business or if you just want to share about something personal or helpful to the public, because people might see you as a trustworthy source of information and engage with you/your business.
Hi Larissa- I always love reading your posts! You do such a deep and thorough job of thinking through and laying out your thoughts very clearly. I like what you said in this week's post about your freedom of style that you have, being that your business is in a less, well, "serious" industry? By that I mean not a job like a doctor or law office or something somewhat stodgy. You have such flexibility (pun intended!) to be creative in how you can share about the gym. Perhaps a weekly email flyer about upcoming lessons, a new move that you can discuss, or something like that.
ReplyDeleteHumor is always a great personal touch to add!
