Week 15 Part B: What we Learn from FaceBook Analytics
My Facebook page doesn't have 100 likes yet (the main reason I created was for class, but it's not ready to share). Because of that, I will be talking about my research over Facebook Analytics.
It is a tool created by Meta to help users of Facebook navigate through their account with ease on the metrics that they provide, in order to have better results by their engagement. This that they show in their statistics are location, engagement by time/reaction from the posts, etc. Another thing is that Facebook use their algorithm based on personal information that we, users, share by navigating on the web. What we search, our main interests, everything is used for them to know who you are and what you like.
But this is tool got really affected on 2021 with the new release from Apple about privacy. Apple changed the setting of privacy with the new upgrade on IOS 14, called Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature and it reduces the capability for advertisers to target and identify Iphone users. This change really affected Facebook, decreasing the sales by $10 billion. With this new feature apple gives the choice for the user to accept or deny to have their info shared with the website/app. This permission caused Facebook the loss of capital, but they can still have the info about the users, if the want to share it. The problem is that most of people don't want that (including me). And because of that, Facebook cannot advertise as they did before, based on the interests that they could find from the person and target them.
As a user, I think this feature Apple created is very good and important. People don't want their personal information being shared and spread in order to have more Ads based on my interests. I think the lack os privacy on social media is something that can be avoided and it's good that Apple gave this choice for the user to decide if they want to allow it.
